Minhwa_Goldy Roosters, 38 x 62cm, Color on Korean Paper
The rooster calls the light. It drives the dark away and brings morning to the world. In old Korea people used to hang a picture of the rooster at the beginning of the year to welcome the new year.
The rooster comb is ‘Byeo-Sul’ in Korean word, the same sound as ‘Government Position’ that was considered to be the best success at that time. (Also, it looks like a crown people thought.)
There is no need to say how people love to have a rooster painting in their houses to bring good luck, often shown in other cultures as well.
The couple of roosters in the painting have such hopeful faces that they almost look even righteous about claiming their good luck. Still, the bold-faced fellows and the stark red sun brightens me up. I hang this painting in my studio. Not for sale until I get too much bright energy I guess.
